The total number of local trains on the Western Railway will exceed 200 by 2024. This expansion is supported by the ongoing construction of the sixth line between Borivali and Virar, with the Kandivali section expected to be completed by October. To accommodate the increased capacity, Western Railway is spending 70 crore rupees to widen platforms at 14 stations between Andheri and Virar, where 15-coach trains will run on the slow corridor. The 15-coach trains will not halt at stations with short platforms between Dadar and Churchgate to avoid delays and ensure safety. The decision to convert 12-coach locals to 15-coach ones was made in 2015 by the Railway Board to reduce crowding and minimize accidents.
