Actually there is a plan by SWR to bypass MAO & KR lines directly connecting to present line after crossing Majorda towards VSG, read somewhere 1 month back.
That will be useful for north bound trains like Vsg-Pnbe SF, if they want to by-pass Mao. The one which is needed is after SJDA a by-pass connecting south KR line towards Karwar.
That is not for North bound trains, it for only SWR trains coming from Kulem side towards Vasco I believe. I remember reading it in Pink book, but not sure.
Atleast one of the two links -- either Talaguppa to Honnavara or Hubli to Ankola -- can be sanctioned with minimal forest area disruption. Now, there is no link from central or malnad area to coast.
