Residents of Kotra, including Shakir and Manno, had reserved seats in the same coach. At 10:09 AM, when the train arrived at platform 3, the coach's door was closed. Passengers outside knocked on the door, and some inside opened it, allowing 3-4 passengers in before closing it again. This triggered an altercation, with passengers outside trying to force their way in and those inside resisting. The fight escalated to the point where the train's guard, VK Pathak, informed the Jhansi control room and the on-duty deputy SS, KC Sony, after a passenger pulled the chain.

Bahar khade passengers ne darwaza khulvaane ke liye khookhtaa maara, toh andar baithe kuchh passengers ne darwaza kholkar 3-4 passengers ko andar kar liya aur phir darwaza band kar diya. Isse bahar khade passengers mein hangaama shuru ho gaya. Woh train mein chadhne ke chakkar mein laath-ghoose barsaane lage. Isse train ke andar se kuchh passengers bahar aa gaye, aur dono party mein maar-peet shuru ho gayi. Is beech train chalne lagi, aur ek passenger ne chain pulling kar di.
