Indian Railways plans new tenders for Kavach installation

Indian Railways plans to install Kavach, an indigenously developed anti-train collision system, across 10,000 kilometers. This will be done in phases over the next few months. All installations will use the LTE (4G) network. Currently, tenders have been awarded for the Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah corridors, covering approximately 3,000 kilometers. Preparatory work is underway for another 6,000 kilometers. The cost of installing Kavach is approximately ₹50 lakh per kilometer for trackside equipment and ₹70 lakh per locomotive. The budget allocated for Kavach in FY24 was ₹710 crore and ₹560 crore in the FY25 Interim Budget. The Eastern Railway has been implementing Kavach on the Howrah-Chhota Ambana section (260 kilometers). The North Western Railway has awarded tenders worth ₹426 crore for 1,600 kilometers. The South Central Railways already has Kavach installed on 1,465 kilometers. The first field trials of Kavach on passenger trains began in February 2016, and the system was adopted as a National ATP system in July 2020.

Dusre 6,000 kilometers ke liye bhi preparatory work chal raha hai. Kavach install karne ka cost lagbhag ₹50 lakh per kilometer trackside equipment ke liye aur ₹70 lakh per locomotive ke liye hai. FY24 mein Kavach ke liye ₹710 crore ka budget allocate kiya gaya tha aur FY25 Interim Budget mein ₹560 crore allocate kiya gaya hai.
