A pilot project is underway to retrofit a Hydrogen Fuel Cell onto an existing Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) rake, with the train expected to operate on the Jind-Sonipat section of Northern Railway. The hydrogen will be supplied by a 1-megawatt (MW) Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) electrolyser installed in Jind, capable of producing 430 kg of hydrogen per day. TUV-SUD, a German company, has been enlisted for a third-party safety audit, with trial runs expected to begin in December 2024.
