***********************************************SOME SALIENT FEATURES OF DHANBAD DIVISION*******************************************************
NOTE:- 2013 DATA, LOOKING FOR UPDATED VERSION!

Dhanbad Division-A historical perspective Dhanbad division is a premier coal loading division. The first colliery line on this division was laid in 1894 and the grand chord section was opened in 1906. The Division was initially created as a transportation sub-division of Asansol division in 1946.

A full-fledged independent division became functional in 1963. Dhanbad division was initially one of the five divisions of the Eastern Railway but after the formation of the new zone ‘East Central Railway’ which came into existence on 1stOctober’ 2002, Dhanbad division became part of East Central Railway along with four other divisions i.e., Mughalsarai, Danapur, Sonepur and Samastipur with headquarter at Hajipur. Thus the headquarter of Dhanbad division which was initially at Kolkata was shifted to Hajipur. Dhanbad division may be called as the backbone of the Indian Railways as it is one of the major revenue earners on Indian Railways. Dhanbad is also called the coal capital of India and as the division primarily loads coal, which is the major commodity of this region. Most of the coal moves to up country destinations primarily to power houses located in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and U.P. Some coal for industries located in Northern India, is also loaded on the division. In addition, coal also moves for down country destinations viz. power houses located in West Bengal, and washed coal to steel plants located at Durgapur, IISCO Burnpur & Tisco. Other commodities loaded on the division include bauxite from Tori, Richughuta and Meralgram to the Hindalco plant at Renukoot, lime stone/dolomite from Bhavnathpur for Bokaro steel plant and cement from ACC-Sindri and Lemos-Khalari. In order to improve freight transportation on Dhanbad division, operations are being constantly streamlined and rationalised The territorial jurisdiction of the division covers Pradhankhunta (incl.)-Manpur (excl.), Gomoh-Barkakana-Garwa Road-Chopan, Chopan-Singrauli-Mahadiya, Karaila Road-Shaktinagar, Dhanbad-Sindri town, Dhanbad-Patherdih & Dhanbad-Chandrapura section. It deals with traffic on two important routes namely G.C. (Grand Chord) section from Pradhankhunta to Manpur & the CIC (Central Industrial Coalfields) section from Gomoh-Barkakana-Garwa road. The division has vast geographical area covering 4 states i.e., Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh and 13 districts i.e., Dhanbad, Giridih, Hazaribagh, Koderma, Nawada, Gaya, Bokaro, Ranchi, Latehar, Palamau, Garwa, Sidhi & Sonebhadra. The Division today covers 3 distinct coal mining areas viz., the Jharia Coalfields serving primarily Bharat Coking Coal Limited, Karanpura area serving primarily Central Coalfields Ltd., and the Singrauli Coalfields of the Northern Coalfields Ltd. The Division deals with traffic on two important routes namely, the Grand Chord section from Pradhankhunta to Manpur and on the CIC section from Gomoh -Barkakana-Garwa Road. Apart from these routes, the division has a number of branch lines and colliery/industrial sidings. The division initially had a large stretch of non-electrified section and therefore dependent on diesel traction but with time, the tracks have been electrified and now the division has 594.76 km of electrified route out of the total 866.84 route kilometres. The Parasnath Jain temple which finds its mention in the world tourists Pilgrim destination, built in 1867 and dedicated to Sheetalnathji, the 10th of the 24 thirthankaras, is situated in this Rail division. Parasnath, the 23rd thirthankara, achieved ‘NIRVANA’ here 100 years after his birth.
