Recently Government of India tried to make Indian Railways modern. Cleanliness of train or station is done by Private contractors. Paperless UTS is good, Paytm or IRCTC online booking is also good to decrease expense of Rail & transparent. Touts & some Rail booking officers also feel tough to earn illegally. But main target punctuality & speed of Indian Rail is 3rd world standard. Bande Bharat is over hyped after 160 KMPH speed. A bike or car can run 180 KMPH. SUV car runs 250 KMPH. China Rail runs 550 KMPH. Rail fare is not cheap. If you travel from Kolkata to Guwahati by train AC 3 tier fare is RS 1400 by ordinary Express & AC 2 tier or AC 1 St class fare is RS 3400 by ordinary Express. Duronto or Humsafar fare is RS 5000. is only RS 1600 & time takes only 1 hour with high punctual. Indian Railways should be private immediately to make world class. Rail fare would be more cheap under private. Telecom sector is successful after privatization. JIO is more cheap & popular than BSNL. I think Indian Railways is failed due to corruption of Rail officers. Even ticket black are done by Rail officers. Now Flight lessens to depend on train. TTE & RPF are lazy to duty & bribe is main target.
The whole premium train sector can go private, as it would have better management and maintenance. It would be better to utilise Premium trains as profit generating ones, and not run them on the sector without enough premium passengers. But the normal categories of trains, i.e. M/E and SF having non AC classes need to remain with Government.
Competition is the driver for privatization but that hasn't worked out everywhere. America has the highest length of railway lines. But People don't prefer rail travel. That is because fares are costly and routes are slow. Private companies were only interested in profits and hence, they only focused on goods transportation and did not develop lines keeping passenger services in mind. So people now prefer Air travel and even road travel. Rail in US is mostly used for goods which is clearly very profitable. This can very well happen in India.
These countries have had higher standard of living than India. Some portions can be transferred like Premium trains but everything cannot be privatized.
