The Village Which Declared Independence From The British Raj and Ran a Parallel Govt 5 Years Before India's Independence
Issuru or Esuru A Small Village in Shikaripura Taluk Of Shimoga is credited to be the first village in India that started a 'prati sarkaar' (provisional or parallel government) in 1942, soon after Gandhiji's call for Quit India movement. They put up a board reading, ‘Swaraj Sarkar’ and hoisted the tricolour Flag
Not only did the revolutionaries of Issuru draft their own rules and regulations, but also fined the British representatives who dared to...
more... enter their village.
In a brilliant move of ingenuity, they made 16-year-old children the functionaries of Issuru's new parallel government who couldn’t be jailed or killed.
In The Following Events Roads Were Blocked Two British officers a Sub inspector Kenche Gowda and Revenue inspector ChennaKrishnappa Were Killed. Followed by a military Intervention.
Gorappa, Eshwarappa, Jinahalli Mallappa, Surayanaryanachar, Badkahalli Halappa and Goudrashankarappa were hanged on March 8, 1943 for revolting against the British and for their alleged involvement in the death of a local revenue inspector. Several others were Captured.
the Mysore Maharaja Jayachamaraja Wodeyer coined the immortal phrase, “Esuru kottaru Issuru kodevu” (We’ll give you many villages but not Issuru)”. Although he couldn’t save the five men, he did manage to convince the local governor into commuting the death sentences of many.
