The 190-kilometer railway line, moving through Meppadi-Sulthan Bathery-Chiackabergy and ending at Nanjangud, aims to connect Kochi with Bengaluru in 7 hours, Wayanad and Bengaluru in just 2.5 hours and Mysore in one hour. The project was initially included in the ‘Pink Book’ of the railway's proposed projects and earmarked for Rs 3000 Crore. The state government's lack of interest led to the exit of E Sreedharan, who was appointed in 2013 to prepare the final survey report. However, with a changed political situation, the state government is now ready to extend support to the project, as the Thalassery-Mysore rail link, initially supported by the state, failed to take off.
