New Rameswaram-Dhanushkodi line unlikely to come to fruitionThe proposed Rameswaram-Dhanushkodi broad-gauge railway line, intended to reconnect the two towns severed since 1964, is facing major hurdles. Despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi laying the foundation stone in January 2019, the project remains stalled after five years due to ecological concerns. The Tamil Nadu government has deemed the planned route...

The alignment of the track, which passes through a fragile ecological zone, is the primary reason for the project's stagnation. The state government has halted the land acquisition process due to the proposed line's intersection with the Rameswaram-Dhanushkodi highway. The original meter-gauge line was destroyed during the 1964 cyclone, and Dhanushkodi was declared unfit for habitation. However, road connectivity was re-established in the 1990s. The proposed new railway line would pass through a biodiversity-rich zone, prompting concerns about its impact on the environment. The project's cost has also escalated significantly, from Rs 208.3 crore in 2018-19 to Rs 733.91 crore after a field study. Chief Minister MK Stalin has officially requested a review or cancellation of the project, citing these challenges. The Southern Railway is currently awaiting further directions from the Railway Board.

Track ka alignment, jo fragile ecological zone se jaata hai, woh project ke rukne ka main reason hai. State government ne land acquisition process bhi rok diya hai, kyunki proposed line, Rameswaram-Dhanushkodi highway se cross karta hai. Original meter-gauge line 1964 ke cyclone mein destroy ho gaya tha, aur Dhanushkodi ko unfit for habitation declare kar diya gaya tha. Leikin 1990s mein road connectivity waapas establish hui. New railway line, biodiversity-rich zone se jaayega, jisse environment par impact hone ki worry hai. Project ka cost bhi bahut badh gaya hai, 2018-19 mein Rs 208.3 crore se badhkar ab Rs 733.91 crore ho gaya hai. Chief Minister MK Stalin ne in challenges ke wajah se project review ya cancellation ke liye request kiya hai. Southern Railway ab Railway Board se aage ke instructions ka intezaar kar raha hai.
