This project is a result of the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan for multi-modal connectivity, providing seamless connectivity for movement of people, goods, and services. It will cover six districts in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, adding approximately 309 km to the existing railway network with 30 new stations. The new line will connect the aspirational district of Barwani and benefit approximately 1,000 villages and 3 million people. This project will boost tourism in the region by providing a shorter route connecting western/south-western India to central India, increasing tourist traffic to various tourist/religious sites in the Ujjain-Indore area, including the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga temple. It will also provide direct connectivity to the Pithampur Auto Cluster (90 large units and 700 small and medium industries) with the JNPT gateway port and other state ports. Additionally, it will connect the bajra-producing districts of Madhya Pradesh and the onion-producing districts of Maharashtra, facilitating distribution across northern and southern India. This project is essential for transporting goods like agricultural products, fertilizers, containers, iron ore, steel, cement, POL, etc., resulting in an additional freight capacity of approximately 26 MTPA (million tons per annum). As a green and energy-efficient mode of transport, it will contribute to achieving climate goals, reducing logistics costs, oil imports (180 million liters), and carbon dioxide emissions (1380 million kilograms), equivalent to planting 55 crore trees.
